GEORGE SCOTT, a one-time understudy to Michael Bell, has been headhunted from the US to fill the plum role as assistant-trainer to Lady Cecil at Warren Place in Newmarket.

The 25-year-old, who will take over from the departing stalwart Mike Marshall, has already met his new employer and staff at Sir Henry's Cecil's former establishment and was on Monday busy buying yearlings at the Tattersalls October Sales as part of his exciting new role.

Scott, who left Britain for the US to gain valuable experience as assistant to Eddie Kenneally on the east coast, had only recently switched to a similar role with Simon Callaghan in California. He received a surprise call from Lady Cecil last week which set the wheels in motion for his early return to Newmarket to take up one of the most sought-after jobs in racing.

Last month Lady Cecil decided to carry on as licence-holder at Warren Place where, to date, she has trained 34 winners at a strike-rate of 23 per cent since the death of Sir Henry in June.

Shortly after making her decision to continue training, long-standing assistant Mike Marshall, who had been a key figure at Warren Place during the Frankel years, decided on a move across town to join Ismail Mohammed.

Following careful consideration of a number of candidates, Lady Cecil plumped for the energetic Scott, who first started out in racing as a lad with Paul Nicholls and was at Ditcheat at the time of the Cheltenham Gold Cup success of Denman in 2008.

Confirming the appointment, Lady Cecil said: "I'm obviously delighted that George is to join us at Warren Place and hopefully he can become an important part of 'Team Cecil'.

"I am impressed by his drive and energy and I know he will be a great asset to the existing team. We have already been active together at the sales and I am very positive about 2014 and beyond."

Scott, who flew into Heathrow on Sunday, said: "I received a call from Lady Cecil last week totally out of the blue and it is a privilege to be even considered for such a role. I enjoyed my time in the US but I always wanted to come back and this is a dream job for me.

"Lady Cecil has done really well in difficult circumstances since taking over the licence after Sir Henry's death and hopefully we can continue that success.

"I am very excited and very positive about the job. Outgoing assistant Mike Marshall could not have been more helpful since I arrived."
