MY FIRST RUNNER
Hamelin looks to be my first ever runner in the “Wild Flower” Listed race at Kempton on Wednesday. Although we have only been in operation for three weeks here at Saffron stables, Hamelin is a horse I know particularly well from my two years at Warren Place.
His piece of work on Friday morning proved there were no concerns about his switch across town and providing we have a problem free few days, he will be declared. There are plenty of reasons to be positive about his chances having run an excellent second over course and distance sixteen days ago.
Stevie Donohoe will keep the ride, he has built up a good relationship with the horse and having ridden him recently is also confident that he remains in great form.
Going forward there are a number of possibilities, both on the All Weather and on the Turf in 2016. Being a half-brother to Sixties Icon a step up in trip might not be out of the question. Hamelin is a horse who travels extremely well in his races, but also has a turn of foot. Something that is required by a high class stayer. The All Weather Championship on Good Friday provides a real incentive to run quality horses on the All Weather. It is not impossible that Hamelin’s next race could be in one of the qualifiers.
I feel privileged and very grateful that I have horses of his ability in the stable in my first year. Although it would be a dream start to see him win, I am realistic that this is only the very beginning of what I hope is a long and successful career.
