PHOSPHORESCENCE DEFIES 425 DAY ABSENCE TO EARN "LEGENDARY" STATUS
Whilst I would hope that my biggest success as a trainer is still to come, in terms of satisfaction it will be hard to beat Phosphorescence’s win in the Legends race at Doncaster on Wednesday. It’s safe to say he pulled out on Thursday morning a lot brighter than I did!
It was incredibly kind of the Niarchos family to support me by sending me Phos when I started training, in order that I had a suitable lead horse. A firm yard favourite, Phos does all the hard work leading the yearlings through the winter, before being called into action to lead the gallops through the summer. He has done sterling work this year for Cajoled and Gilgamesh, prior to their three victories. Whilst he’d had over 400 days of the track, I knew he would not lack for fitness.
I'd seen this race in the calendar during the summer and it had always been in the back of my mind for him. Phos does not have the greatest of feet and when he pulled a shoe last week during a piece of work, I did have my doubts about getting him to the track. My farriers and lads worked hard to ensure he made it. With Joseph booked it was then up to 'which' Phos turned up; typical of some lead horses, he works to a mark far in excess of his official rating. Whilst I was sure he would give a good account of himself, I was less sure he would have the heart for a battle, I needn’t have worried!
This win, for all of us at Saffron House, will live long in the memory. The Niarchos family were delighted to support such an important cause. Thank you to all that made it happen.
