ONE YEAR ON
It's hard to believe that a year ago I moved 13 horses into Saffron House. It’s fair to say I’ve been on a steep learning curve ever since! Training is a passion and I’ve few regrets, but managing a small business and employing staff was very new to me. I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past year, especially my senior staff Alex, Billy and Chris.
I started with my first runner being placed in a listed race, before quickly getting off the mark in December with a first time out two year old for the Niarchos family. Subsequently, to date my team have had 14 winners, delivering a healthy 14% strike rate. There have been some amazing highs, with the likes of Illusive winning at Glorious Goodwood and Phosphorescence winning the legends race at Doncaster; giving all of us days that will live long in the memory. Alongside that, there have been plenty of disappointments, something that never gets any easier.
Versatility has been shown throughout the season, training maiden winners at two and three, with Saturday handicappers being particularly lucrative, I’ve also brought horses through from maiden to handicap company including Imperial State, who was backed up successfully under a penalty.
Rejuvenating older horses to run consistently well; when they had lost their way is also something that I am proud to have achieved this season.
I have recently doubled the capacity at Saffron Stables to 50 stables, something that was unfathomable a year ago. I have welcomed new owners to the yard; including successful syndicates Ontoawinner and Excel racing, whilst current patrons have continued to show their support for which I'm incredibly grateful.
The team and I remain hugely ambitious for the seasons ahead. Roll on next year!
