James Garfield has returned from his American adventure in great spirit. Considering he has flown half way across the world, he looks in fantastic condition and I am sure it has not left a mark on him.

Unfortunately, he was not able to show his true form. Having broken sharply from the gate, he was unable to hold an early tactical position. With Del Mar’s notorious tight turns, he found himself way off the pace and was unable to make any sort of move.

He was only beaten four lengths in the end having been hampered numerous times. Overall we had a fantastic trip and I’m hugely grateful to the Gredley’s for allowing us to take James, he will now have a winter break.

At this stage, I would not like to be drawn on future targets. He will start over 7 furlongs next season, from there we'll be able to make a decision on whether to go for the Guineas or drop back and aim for the Commonwealth cup. With his win in the Mill Reef, the latter option may well be best suited, but I’m keeping an open mind.

As far as runners go in the next few weeks, we have a few maidens to get going. I generally tend to concentrate on the yearlings over the winter.
